Renewal High School Students and the Food Bank for New York City
On February 8, 2017, hundreds of high school students used math to help solve a real-life problem within New York City.
How?
By completing 27,800 math lessons across multiple NYC Renewal High Schools. And those lessons also meant reward points, which could be used as students saw fit.
So what motivated Renewal’s students to give to the Food Bank for New York City when some students might have been content with an in-class celebration?
Food Bank for New York, Imagine Learning
It’s not all that surprising that Renewal High School students wanted to donate to a cause they understand.
Throughout the five boroughs of New York, many high school students already know what it’s like to be hungry, including some of the students who donated math points toward a cash donation for the food bank.
Each Renewal student had to do a lot of math problems to make a difference for others–translating to improved math skills, academic success, and a brighter future.

Here’s what a representative from the food bank had to say:
“Thank you for choosing Food Bank for New York City. The generosity of Imagine Learning and NYC Renewal High School students will help to feed many New Yorkers in need. [This event] was an awesome testament to New Yorkers showing that they care. To see and hear this through the voices and actions of children was amazing.”
In total, over 4,000 students donated math points to the NYC Gives project on behalf of the food bank. Sounds like the perfect sum of math and charitable giving!
